Hypnotherapy is a psychotherapy which can be used to cure myriad of conditions such as breaking bad habits such as smoking, coping with stress, dealing with low and negative self - esteem and as a treatment for panic attacks. Hypnotherapy as gained popularity in recent times and it has been generally accepted as a complementary and alternative medicine. In hypnotherapy, the therapist puts the patient in a hypnosis, which is a state where the patient gets a sense of deep relaxation, their attention narrowed and focused heightened. In hypnosis, the patient does not get into sleep but in a state where their awareness is enhanced and concentration if focused on the voice of the hypnotist. In this state, the conscious mind is suppressed while the subconscious mind is unhidden. The person in this state is more suggestible to new ideas and behaviors.

One of the conditions where hypnotherapy has been used extensively is in the treatment of panic attacks; a sudden feeling of overwhelming fear and anxiety, which may cause increased sweating, shortness of breath, palpitations and fear.  There is also the fear of death. People experiencing a panic attack experience an intense feeling of anxiety that make feel like they are going to die. Panic attacks can cause serious psychological and emotional effects on the person. It could be worse if one suffered a panic attack while driving; this could result in a bad accident. A panic attacks at nightcan easily be mistaken for a heart attack due to similarities in their symptoms.

However, there is a difference between a panic attack and a heart attack. If you cannot tell which one of them you are suffering your doctor will be able to diagnose you. Hypnotherapy is able to treat panic attacks because with hypnosis all fears, anxieties and negative emotions are locked in the subconscious mind. The subconscious can then be trained and reprogrammed to reinterpret the fear and respond to panic inducing situations. This can be used by the person to free themselves from panic attacks and anxiety.

In addition to treating negative self image, hypnotherapy is used as self-esteem therapy. Hypnosis is a relaxing process that can be used to redirect both the conscious and subconscious attention of the mind. The aim of this redirection is to change negative thoughts that could be the cause of low self-esteem. Hypnosis for self-esteem can erase negative self-image of a person.  Additionally, hypnotherapy is used to treat people with chronic insomnia.
